The Institute of Seoul Studies was established in 1993, on the 600th anniversary of the establishment of Seoul as the capital of Korea. Its objective is to rediscover and reinterpret the cultural and historical city of Seoul and to study it in systematic fashion. It aims to inspire the citizens of Seoul to support heritage and local research and bring about a spirit of community. With interdisciplinary research in urban history, geography, culture, nature, urbanism, architecture, economics, environmental studies, social sciences and various other fields related to the formation and growth of Seoul, the Institute of Seoul Studies provides guidance on the intellectual foundation of Seoul's development as a rich cultural city.
